Patrick and Merryl McNamara have farmed their Nagambie and Wahring properties for the past 36 years.
The walnut orchard graces the beautiful banks of Lake Burramurra, Wahring 10km north of the township of Nagambie. The property, named "Burramurra", has been in the family for 50 years and is also home to a small vineyard where our Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot is produced.
Patrick developed an interest in wine and walnuts when he was Deputy Premier of Victoria and Minister for Agriculture and Natural Resources. He became interested in the research his department was doing into walnuts which lead to the addition of a walnut plantation, at their existing vineyard property.
The first block of the walnut orchard was planted to seed in 1999 and over the next few years was gradually grafted to the Californian variety called Chandler. This is the most popular variety of nut with its light colour shell and kernal and ease of cracking. The second block was planted in 2004 with the third planted in 2005. Our first harvest of the no. 1 block took place in 2007 with no. 2 and no.3 blocks producing in 2012 and 2013. Full production from the 3 blocks will start in 2014. The orchard now comprises about 9000 trees spread over 80 acres.
The orchard has produced premium walnuts for some years now which are sold from the historic" Barwood Park Homestead" situated on the Melbourne side of the Nagambie township and accessed via a long driveway from the main road (High St) of Nagambie. The selling season for walnuts is usually late April to early October depending on seasonal conditions and crop harvest.
Nagambie Walnuts and Wine is an easy 90 minute drive north of Melbourne.
