Mitchelton Winery’s history can be traced over the decades with the continually unfolding narrative of its exceptional wines. The geological formation of the unique vineyard location has been forged through the pervasive influence of the Goulburn River’s shifting flow over millions of years. The river surrounds the vineyard on three sides, shaping the unique environment and climate of Mitchelton Estate and creating individual vineyards within a vineyard. Mitchelton’s team works in harmony with the land to unlock the best from each block through innovation and interaction with the soil. This intimate and focused approach creates wines of distinct personality, finesse and longevity.

The site’s history stretches back to 1836, when the explorer Major Thomas Mitchell crossed the river here on his 900 kilometre journey from Sydney to Port Phillip. A site for a township was surveyed which was to have been called Mitchellstown. Ross Shelmerdine called his fledgling winery Mitchelton, a derivation of Mitchellstown and the vineyard’s first sod was turned in 1969. Don Lewis joined former Seppelts winemaker Colin Preece for the fledgling winery’s first vintage in 1973, and assumed the winemaker’s mantle when Preece retired in 1974.

Noted Australian architect, Robyn Boyd drew conceptual plans for the winery, tower  and cellar door facility. Sadly, Boyd never saw the completed buildings and following his death in 1971, Ted Ashton oversaw the completion of the unique building works that is now considered amongst Australia’s most recognisable wineries.

Now under the stewardship of the Ryan Family, an exciting new era is unfolding in re-establishing Mitchelton as one of Australia’s premier winery visitation experiences. Extensive renovations have been completed to the cellar door, restaurant and tower, incorporating multi-purpose function and conferencing facilities under the guidance of renown hospitality interior designers, Hecker & Guthrie. Recently, Mitchelton added a chocolate factory to its stable of attractions and a partnership has been formed with Chocolatier and patisserie Chef, Drew Maddison with the opening of the Ministry of Chocolate Café.

Planning is now well under way in building a new 60 room, 4.5 star hotel embracing retreat-style accommodation overlooking the majestic Goulburn River and estate vineyard. This will further enhance Mitchelton’s reputation as one of Victoria’s premier regional destinations for food and wine explorers.
