Noorilim is one of the most lavish and best-preserved country mansions ever constructed in Australia. Designed by James Gall and built in 1879 for Mr William Irving Winter-Irving MLC, it features Minton tiles, marble fireplaces, 10 bedrooms, 7 staircases and extensive underground living compartments and cellar. From 1917-1927 it was owned and operated by Mr Norman Falkiner as one of the most successful thoroughbred horse studs in the world. Comedy King, the first foreign-born horse to win the Melbourne Cup in 1910 was studded at Noorilim and was buried on the property. Comedy King sired two other Melbourne Cup winners including Artilleryman (1919) and King Ingoda (1922), respectively. Spearfelt, sired by Spearhead at Noorilim, also won the Victoria Derby (1924), Melbourne Cup (1926) and Australian Cup (1927). The property is steeped in racing history and a national treasure well worth visiting.
